Steinernes Meer is an appropriate name for this area. Rocky desert would have been hit too. Very dry and exposed to the sun in good weather – be sure to bring sun protection and/or go very early in the morning. Paths are very easy to find, especially due to the numerous markings. Difficulties in finding your way are only to be expected in dense fog or snow. Surefootedness absolutely necessary, on most of the paths the hands have to be used occasionally. The well-known peaks of the Steinernes Meer are therefore demanding. Isolated rockfalls could be heard at the Großer Hundstod. But the high plateau is not entirely barren. Again and again one encounters sheep and chamois. Marmots can also be heard.

So you could imagine the surface of the moon: Karger rock, boulders and rocks. It's amazing to scramble up here. Again and again a view over the undulating landscape of the Stone Sea. A change of light and shadow that produces bizarre beauty.
