The National Museum of Iceland, located at Suðurgata 41, is an important cultural institution that provides insight into Icelandic cultural history. The museum was founded on February 24, 1863 and has since amassed an extensive collection that highlights the history of the Icelandic nation from the settlement to the present day. One of the main objects in the permanent exhibition is the Valþjófsstaður door, a famous woodcut depicting a version of the Lion Knight legend in which a knight slays a dragon, releasing a lion who becomes his companion.
