The Mörth, located on a plateau up to 446 m high in the Schwalenberg Forest, is a former rain or raised bog, which today is mostly planted with spruce and larch, while the surrounding forest is dominated by beeches. Once for economic use, peat cutting, drained and then reforested, today 43 hectares of the originally unwooded moor and heathland are under nature protection. A brick factory was active here until 1850. The name Mörth comes from the Lippe Low German and simply means moor.

'Green Idyll instead of Cold War' would be the keyword, considering that there was a Dutch military base for anti-aircraft missiles up here until 1994. Plans to make a contribution to the energy transition by constructing a pumped storage power station in this military sector were abandoned in the summer of 2015. What remains? A large nature reserve that has renatured itself after scrapping and dismantling, under supervision 'itself. Not bad either.
