Fort Lillo is a former fortress and a small residential area north of Antwerp on the right bank of the Scheldt. It used to be part of the disappeared municipality of Lillo and is completely surrounded by the port of Antwerp. In 1958 it was added to Antwerp and since the decentralization in 2000 it belongs to the Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo district of the city of Antwerp.

The Fort of Lillo is proof that the forts cannot be broken. While the rest of the village has had to make way for the port of Antwerp, the fortress is still there. Result: a tiny village with the name Lillo-Fort on the fortress domain.

The picturesque Scheldt village of Lillo-Fort has a turbulent history. As you walk down the jetty towards the village, the old defensive structures become apparent. The village itself is centuries old: as early as 840, the town of Lindelo was mentioned. But during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648), William of Orange commissioned the famous forts of Lillo and Liefkenshoek to be built on either side of the Scheldt, and the village took on a completely different function. The forts were intended to protect Antwerp from Spanish attacks.

The ramparts and moat of Fort Lillo are still clearly visible from the air, but with your feet on the ground, you'll feel like you're in a picturesque village where today only the houses within the fort walls remain.
