Kruisheide consists mainly of heathland and some woodland. It is a remnant of the "Keerberghen Heyde," a link in the eighteenth-century heathland belt that stretched from Bonheiden to Baal. Oak-birch forests spontaneously developed on the nutrient-poor sandy soil. Land clearing for livestock farming led to extensive heathlands. These areas have come under pressure in recent centuries due to increasing urbanization. Today, only a few relics remain.
