Penig's town hall was first mentioned in a document in 1367. The building at that time was mostly made of stone. However, by 1545 it had fallen into such disrepair that a new one had to be built. In 1545/46, today's town hall was built in the style of the Saxon Early Renaissance with a rich, three-part main portal made of Rochlitz porphyry

In 1632 it fell victim to a major fire and was then rebuilt. A Seiger tower and the clockwork were added. In 1711 it burned down again to the ground and was rebuilt in its original form in 1717. The roof turret and the wind vane date from this time. The gables were only added in 1922.
