The origins of the castle date back to the 13th century, when it was the seat of the Lords of Carben. 1356 is the year in which the castle was first mentioned - as a fief from the Counts of Hanau. In 1367, the fortress was handed over to the von Kolnhausen family, from whom it passed to the Löw von Steinfurth family as a Hanau fief. In 1412, they had to grant the Counts of Hanau the right to open it. From 1503 to 1816, the castle was owned by the Lords of Greiffenclau zu Vollrads. In 1710, the new manor house was built, which still stands today. In 1913, the municipality acquired the building and the property after it had undergone several changes of ownership.
In front of the moated castle, a large square has been created that is used as a festival site. In summer, a varied open-air cultural program takes place here.

The moated castle is located in Nieder-Rosbach, not Karben.
