The "Gleichamberger Steinbruch" was in operation from 1897 to 1981.
In 1975 the basalt works were assigned to the combine STK (road and civil engineering
Combined) Suhl assigned.
One of the reasons for the permanent closure in 1981 was the fact
that since 1967/68 the Russian army claimed part of the summit plateau for radio surveillance.
The noise and dust during the blasting disrupted this activity. After the closure of the fracture
the Soviet Army took over the entire summit area.
It was a restricted military area until the Soviet troops withdrew in mid-1991.

You can also get in from below. However, I wouldn't necessarily recommend climbing in there.
