One of the few saints who is also highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in the German-speaking world as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth as the son of wealthy parents he was a bon vivant, but later he turned to Christ. In the half-ruined little church of San Damiano, on the hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, he was praying one day and heard the voice of Christ coming down from the cross, urging him to “rebuild his church”. At first he took this request literally and restored the church building, later he came to realize that this is primarily about the church as the community of believers.
Many people joined him, and the Order of the Friars Minor of Francis of Assisi was born. Today in the broad Franciscan religious family there are three male branches: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; and two females: the Franciscans and the Poor Clares.
His burial church in Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco, which did not even exist during Francis' lifetime, is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan religious family. It can be found here as a hiking highlight under this link: komoot.de/highlight/138624

The Franciscan Order was active here from 1250 to 1552. After the Reformation, the sovereign transferred the building to the city for use as a poor house until 1945. After that, the buildings were used for storage, workshop and administrative purposes. In 1979 the registry office was established here. After renovation at the end of the 20th century, a municipal museum was established here.

In the northern arch of Neubrandenburg's city center is the former Franciscan monastery, a historic architectural ensemble whose foundations date back to the early days of the city. Many generations created an extensive complex, which today has national significance as a monument. The former monastery church of St. John, the west wing, the north wing and the remains of the east wing have been preserved.

The Franciscan monastery founded by the Brandenburg margraves around 1260 was not far from the princely city residence, structural traces of which were discovered at the monastery site.

The brothers living in the convent devoted themselves to preaching, pastoral care and charity. In the middle of the 16th century the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation; from then on the buildings served different purposes.
The church and the west wing are used by the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Sankt Johannis and the Stargard church district administration. In the north wing, the former refectory (monastic dining area) with its unique room vaults and masonry designs of medieval brick Gothic, the city history exhibition moves in 2013 after extensive renovation work.
