    story
"At the beginning of the 19th century, the first Jewish families settled permanently in what is today the city of Herne. Temporary presence of Jewish merchants can be traced back to the middle of the 18th century. Thus, the blessing attached to a gate-beam in Old-Crange, "Blessed be at your entrance, blessed be at your exit" (Deuteronomy 28: 6), from that time; it was addressed to the Jewish traders who then took part in the fair horse market. The few Jewish families in Herne initially belonged to the synagogue community Bochum; From 1889 they formed an independent synagogue community and held their own services. Initially, a flat in a private house was used as a bed room, later a room in the new school building was used for this purpose. On 16 July 1911, the representative new synagogue was completed, at the solemn inauguration also the prominence of the city of Herne took part. Chairman of the Jewish community Herne was then Moritz Ganz.
During the November pogrom Nazis set fire to the synagogue; Roof truss and interiors completely burned out; One parishioner was able to save the Torah scroll in the burning synagogue. [...] Immediately the Jewish community was ordered to lay down the synagogue ruin within the shortest possible time. The partially destroyed synagogue building was demolished in the spring of 1939 and the site was sold by the city to a mining company. Since 1941 there were several "ghetto houses" in the Bahnhofstrasse, where Jewish families had to live until their deportation. The deportations of 1942/1943 sealed the end of the Jewish community in the spring of 1943. In total, 248 Jews from Herne have become victims of the National Socialist tyranny. "After the war, survivors of the Holocaust came to Herne; some soon moved to other cities or emigrated. Due to the small number of members joined in 1953, the communities Herne, Bochum and Recklinghausen together to a religious community; the majority of the community life took place from now on in Recklinghausen, where in 1955 a synagogue was inaugurated. After 1975, even the very few Jews from Wanne-Eickel belonged to the religious community.
In 1949, near Neumarkt, not far from the former synagogue, a memorial stone with a tablet was erected for the persecuted and murdered citizens of the Jewish faith. Ten years later, at the request of the Jewish community, this memorial was taken to the cemetery at Hoverskamp in Herne-Baukau, where it is still located today. [...] In 1963, a plaque was unveiled on the site of the former synagogue in Schaeferstraße.
With the immigration from areas of the former USSR in the 1990s, the number of members of the community increased so much that in 1999 the "Jewish Community Bochum - Herne-Recklinghausen" shared. The newly formed "Bochum - Herne - Hattingen" counted more than 1,000 relatives in 2005. "Source: wiki.huen-un-perduen.de/index.php?title=Synagoge_(Herne)
