Fort De Brederode or Dungense Schans was part of the 42 kilometer long Circumvallation Line that was constructed in 1629 to conquer the 'invincible' city of 's-Hertogenbosch from the Spaniards.
This line ran partly over the Keerdijk at Den Dungen and behind the Poeldonkse dike. The fortress formed a unit with the Quarter of Count Johan Wolfert van Brederode (3000 men). This Encampment was west of this point about halfway down the Keerdijk. Immediately east of this fortification, Van Brederode's Cavalry was stationed.
