The Ascension Cathedral or Zenkov Cathedral is one of the most important monuments of the Orthodox Faith in Kazakhstan. The doors of the Ascension Cathedral opened for the first time in 1907.

From the early 20th century, the church building was used for other purposes. After the Russian Revolution, the magnificent wooden building functioned as a state museum, later it was available to public organizations and was a venue for concerts and exhibitions. The 56m high tower of the cathedral acted as the first radio transmitter of Almaty. It was not until May 1995 that the cathedral came back into the possession of the Russian Orthodox parish. Two years later the first services were held again.
