The old Gaußturm was built in 1911 and has always been a popular excursion destination. Over the years, basalt mining was also carried out directly below the tower. As a result, the first cracks appeared on the tower as early as the 1950s. In 1963, the building collapsed due to loosening of the ground. After a ruling by the Celle Higher Regional Court, the basalt factory was obliged to build a new building. The new Gaußturm was completed in 1964.

The Gaußturm is a particular attraction for hikers. The viewing platform or the café can be rented, but as far as I know there are no regular opening times.
The area around the Hohen Hagen is particularly suitable for hiking and cycling - and in winter for tobogganing. A geology and mining trail shows not only cultural and natural monuments but also relics from mining activities.

The new Gaußturm is not really pretty, but it is very present as a landmark.
I always like to incorporate it into my tours.
