The section of the route between the eastern foot of the slag heap and Oer-Erkenschwick has been developed into the "Alte Zechenbahn" landscape nature trail for hikers and cyclists at the instigation of the town of Oer-Erkenschwick and the district of Recklinghausen. It is looked after by former miners who came together in 1993 to form the Friends of the Former Zechenbahn Association. The nature trail directly connects the Honermannsiedlung with the urban area of Oer-Erkenschwick. The path is lined with native shrubs and trees and thus represents a habitat for many endangered animal and plant species.
