St. Paul's Chapel is the oldest church in Manhattan. It was completed in 1766. At that time, it was still located outside the city limits and served as a church for those who lived too far from the main church. The towers of the World Trade Center stood behind St. Paul's Chapel. Miraculously, however, the chapel was not damaged when the towers collapsed. Only the organ suffered from smoke and debris. For months afterward, the church served as a shelter for firefighters, police officers, and construction workers working at Ground Zero. Hundreds of volunteers provided them with food and prayed with them. The fact that the church remained undamaged contributed to its becoming a memorial for mourners, who left countless flowers and photos on the garden fences.

Today, the new One Word Trade Center can be seen in the background of the small, very old church. A great photo opportunity!

The entrance to 'St. Paul’s Chapel is located on Church Street. Built in 1766, it is now the oldest church in Manhattan. When the World Trade Center collapsed after the 9/11 attack in 2001, the church was not damaged despite its proximity to the attack. It has since been referred to as “The Little Chapel That Stood”. George Washington is said to have attended mass in this church after his appointment as 1st President of the United States at Federal Hall on Wall Street.
