The village was first mentioned in 1290. The nuns of the Kitzinger convent have been handed down as the oldest village lords. Around 1466, the rule passed to the lords of Seinsheim, who acquired Kaltensondheim together with the castle estate in Erlach. After the Thirty Years' War, the Lords of Schwarzenberg received the place. It was not until 1814 that Kaltensondheim became a rural community in the Kingdom of Bavaria.
In 1978 Kaltensondheim was incorporated into the municipality of Biebelried.
