The complex (which also includes the church of San Cristoforo alla Certosa) was originally founded as a Carthusian monastery in 1452, at the behest of Borso d'Este, and arose, as per tradition, outside the walls... After the monastery was closed, following the Napoleonic suppressions, the monks were expelled and the buildings were used as military barracks. It was then purchased by the municipality of Ferrara and definitively transformed into a city cemetery starting in 1813.
