Lippe Floodplain Near Lünen

The dramatically positive change that nature has undergone on the Lippe since the 1970s can be experienced here in the middle of the city: 50 years ago, many collieries and industrial companies between Hamm and Wesel discharged their waste water into the Lippe. The river water was red, in Lünen mountains of foam testified to the nearby aluminum smelter and only 20 animal species lived on and in the Lippe. Today the water is clear again and we count over 600 animal species, including real "stars" such as beavers and otters. However, this is not only due to the improvement in water quality, the animals are also able to find suitable habitats again today: they can find trees and dead wood in the floodplains that have been wetted again, and they can once again dig nesting holes above and below the water on open steep banks. The sand martin, which is only rarely found in NRW, is doing the latter again.The Lüner Lippe floodplain is thus making a real success story visible: Biodiversity and nature are being given back space and we can watch them in amazement.

Lünen is a beautiful city with a nice open pedestrian zone and a high-rise town hall. This is where the Seseke cycle path ends and the Lünen Lippeauen are there as a circular route. Via part of the Römer-Lippe-Route we are on the Datteln-Hamm Canal to Werne. Nice city with a lot of water.
