    Saltina Bridge, Brig

In 1993 the Saltina, a brook from the Simplon region that flows into the Rhone in Brig, overflowed its banks and caused one of the biggest storm disasters in Switzerland. The "jumping" (lat. Saltare) carried vast amounts of rubble with her, which was subsequently deposited throughout the city center and damaged innumerable buildings and their facilities down to ground floor level. In the area of the train station and the Rhonesand district, the dammed water formed a bizarre lake landscape that had to be navigated by boats. There were two fatalities; In view of the huge eruption of nature, it could have been much more.

Since then, Brig-Glis has been commemorating the tragic event every year on September 24th with a memorial service. The flood hit Brig-Glis unexpectedly, as it was more than 70 years ago when the Saltina last showed its unbridled power. The clearance and repair work, which was supported by great solidarity across Switzerland, lasted around a year.

The result is, among other things, a redesigned inner city that, with the exception of the old castle, was badly damaged. At the same time, the opportunity was seized to significantly enlarge the area around the town square and make it traffic-free; today this area is very busy. Events of all kinds take place here regularly and the weekly farmers' market on Saturday has become an integral part of the cityscape.

A new bridge was stretched over the Saltina, which can be lifted by the weight of the water by means of a hydraulic system. Since then, the innovative bridge, together with a number of other flood protection measures, has been protecting the Brig-Glis settlement area.

The Saltina Bridge is probably the first lifting bridge that can be raised by the flood itself. The lifting system used is suitable for mountain streams where sudden flooding is to be expected and which cannot be constantly monitored. (saltinabruecke.ch)

On September 24, 1993, the flood of the century flooded the old town of Brig and parts of Glis, leaving behind meter-high masses of debris after the water had dammed up on the old bridge. There were 2 fatalities in the disaster.
