    In 1001, on the site of today's church, there was a St. Michael's Church, which is mentioned in the documents of the Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma. The cathedral was destroyed by several fires, but was always rebuilt. In the 18th century the church, which is characterized by Romanesque and Gothic styles, was fundamentally restored. The baroque elements added at this time were removed again during the restoration from 1907 to 1910. Since then, the three-aisled, cross-shaped basilica has had a Gothic character in the chancel and a predominantly neo-Romanic character in the nave and transept. The western twin towers were also raised a few meters and restored to the Romanesque style. Numerous picture windows with depictions of saints adorn the building. The central nave is closed off by a flat wooden coffered ceiling.
