The old town hall was built between 1748 and 1750 according to plans by Friedrich Joachim Stengel as the final element on the place of honor opposite today's palace. It is a well proportioned three storey building with a slate clock turret on the mansard roof. The year of construction MDCCL and the Saarbrücken coat of arms are shown in the segment gable.

When the city of Saarbrücken was formed in 1909 by merging the individual cities, the administration moved to the larger town hall in St. Johann, which was built at the end of the 19th century. Like many other buildings in Saarbrücken, the old town hall was destroyed in the Second World War, but was rebuilt in the years that followed, probably according to Stengel's plans.
Today the old town hall is the seat of the Saarbrücken Adult Education Center.
