Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge lasted from 1869 to 1883. The bridge was opened in May 1883. It was the longest steel suspension bridge in the world. For a while, the Brooklyn Bridge was the only connection between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The construction history of the bridge is interesting: the architect who planned the bridge died quite soon after construction began. His son, also an architect, was to take over the construction management. In the end most of it was done by his wife, who had no formal technical training. interest aroused? Then google a little or listen to the appropriate episode of the "Stories from History" podcast!

As described in all other tips and the name says it all, a nice view of the bridge. The nearby small restaurants in the area of the sailing ships, near the bridge, invite you to linger. Lock bicycles well!
