Both Venetian wall fountains were built in Venice in the middle of the 16th century; they are from the late Renaissance. When the fountain at the Schwedenstiege and its counterpart at the Rote Tor came to Germany is uncertain. The fountains come from the Venetian square with the Colleoni monument. Augsburg had excellent trade relations with Venice in its great time.

The Schwedenstiege lies in the height of the oblate wall and consists for the most part of a brick staircase. It connects the streets Unterer Graben and Schwedenweg and has 71 steps. It is called Schwedenstiege because it was created in its present form by the Swedes who occupied Augsburg during the Thirty Years' War in order to reach the ring walls faster over the moat.

At the lower end of the Schwedenstiege lies the Venetian shellfish well, which is now a drinking water well. Its counterpart stands at the Red Gate. Both wall wells were donated by Consul Bernheimer.

Above the Schwedenstiege are still about 100 meters of the old Augsburg city wall preserved and the monument "D` Stoinerne Ma".
