The Japanese Garden is over 100 years old and a beautiful element in Karlsruhe's zoological city garden. It is one of the reasons why you should visit the city garden.A section of the Karlsruhe city garden was laid out as a Japanese garden as early as 1913/14.In 1927, Karlsruhe received a Shinto shrine by the temple builder Jusiro Yamada, stone lions by the sculptor Kasuke Araki and the blueprint for the Torii as a gift from the city of Nagoya. In 1938, a 13-story pagoda was added. In 1965, Shinto priest and garden architect Prof. Keiji Ujehara held an earth appeasement ceremony to kick off the renovation work for the 1967 Federal Garden Show. The Japanese Garden was upgraded and expanded to include the "Kare-Sansui", the dry Zen garden. While the old part represents a miniature landscape from the mountains to the sea, the "Kare Sansui" is a greatly reduced seascape with interesting, meaningful stone settings that recreate rock formations.

Beautifully landscaped Japanese garden with a stream and stones to cross. In April/May the azaleas and rhododendrons bloom, a wonderful display of color.
