Until the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal (1896-1900), the Wakenitz flowed around the city hill and emptied into the Trave south of Lübeck.
After the canal was built, the Wakenitz was closed off by the Falkendamm and e.g. drained via the culvert into the Krähenteich/Mühlenteich.
The decorative gauge house is used to measure the water level here so that it can be regulated if necessary.
