The Engen Ice Age Park is nestled in the Kleine Brudertal, around 2.5 km east of Engen. The valley, which runs unusually from east to west, was formed during a cold phase of the last ice age around 22,000 years ago, when a huge flow of meltwater carved itself into the soft Jura layers across the advancing ice masses of the Alps. Old cave systems in Jurassic coral reefs were cut, such as Petershöhle and Gnirshöhle.
