The Swiss Franciscan Monastery of St. Josef in Muotathal is the oldest still active Franciscan monastery in Europe. Due to its long spiritual tradition, it is considered a special place of power.

The history of the Franciscan convent of St. Josef began in 1234/35. A group of begarians and beguines established their celibate and pious life in a building on the creek Muota. Over the decades, the religious community lost members and in 1280 consisted of only eight women. In order to guarantee the protection of the small women's community, the local pastor asked them to join a regular order. Instead of leaving Muotathal and entering one of the nearby Cistercian or Dominican convents, the religious community of women hoped to found their own monastery. For this purpose she contacted the Franciscan monks in Lucerne and they supported the cause.
