Alongside Saint Nicholas, Saint Martin is probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is on November 11th. On the night after the famous "dividing of the cloak", when he leaves half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears in a dream. He converted to Christianity and was later elected bishop of Tours, initially against his will.
Almost every child who grew up in Germany should have fond memories of making lanterns in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern procession through the dark village / district - and of course the delicious "Weckmann".

According to legend, the church of St. Martin was to be located in a different place, namely Stiennack, which today lies in the mud flats, in the Süderhaff, and at that time was still land. The builders had already carried the material together when overnight the stones were moved "from an invisible hand" to another place. The Morsums saw in it a hint of God and built their church in this place. St. Martin was probably built in the last third of the 12th century, making it Sylt's oldest church. The late Romanesque church does not have a tower, instead a wooden stack of bells stands by the church of Saint Martin.

Also beautifully decorated, especially at Christmas time. Very moving entries in the visitor book too.
