The Eschweiler Tal and the Kalkkuppen became a nature reserve in 1969. These limestone semi-arid grasslands, which were created as early as the Middle Ages by clearing and extensive sheep grazing, have locally large occurrences of rare or endangered orchid species, including bee orchid, fly orchid, man's orchid, purple orchid and burnt orchid.
