A - normally - so small and lovely river can cause so incredibly large damage. As late as September 2022, the flood damage from the heavy rain catastrophe of July 2021, which devastated the center of Bad Münstereifel, among other things, has not been repaired everywhere.

Bad Münstereifel on the Erft has a very special flair. With the beautiful old houses, with the city fortifications, the castle and with the many cafes and restaurants with outdoor dining right on the river.
        Beautiful!
The Erft rises a few kilometers south of Bad Münstereifel, where groundwater from the mountains flows as a stream down the foot of the Eifel in the towns of Frohngau and Holzmühlheim, a good 400 meters above sea level. From Euskirchen, the Erft has become a river and crosses the flat Börden landscape in the middle of wide arable land, flows past villages, small towns, lignite excavators and large power plants, and also through recultivated landscapes with new forests and lakes. After 104 kilometers it flows into the Rhine near Neuss at an altitude of only 26 meters above sea level
