"... In Duisburg harbor, the architectural firm Ortner & Ortner Baukunst built the new building for the NRW State Archives (Rhineland Department) from 2010-14, which is currently the largest archive building in Germany. The listed warehouse building of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Speditions-Gesellschaft from the 1930s was extended by a 76-meter-high archive tower in the center, which also represents a monumental landmark. The design language of the tower is based on the old warehouse building with its protruding and receding gables.

The so-called RWSG warehouse, named after the Rheinisch-Westfälische Speditions-Gesellschaft, was listed as a historic monument in 2006 because, as one of the last grain silos in Duisburg's inner harbor, it impressively documents the architecture of large warehouses from the 1930s and bears witness to the work of the so-called Reichsnährstand (RNST) during the National Socialist era. In the urban planning context, the industrial monument represents a northern gateway to the city center.

The 48-meter-long former granary is adjoined by a wave-shaped, 160-meter-long new building. The 6-story building houses reading rooms and offices. With its dark red plaster, the new building echoes the brick-red facade of the granary.

The facade of the granary, which was darkened by soot and exhaust fumes, was preserved. The windows were bricked up to protect the archive material from daylight. The color and texture of the new brickwork correspond to the surface of the original, uncolored bricks. The facade is characterized by the contrast between the new and the old stones. The ornament of the brick facade was further developed as a diamond structure, which is formed by a slight offset of the clinker bricks. ..."
