Großkatern is a town in Hückeswagen in the Oberberg district and is located on the Purder Bach, which flows into the Große Dhünntalsperre after the confluence with the Große Dhünn brook. The place borders on the forest and recreation area Mul. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1481 in the list of donations for the Marienaltar in the Hückeswagen Church. Spelling of the first mention: Katerdaell.
