In 1323 Hemmingstedt was first mentioned as an independent parish. The church was built in the 14th century as a hall with a retracted box choir in field stone and brickwork. In the 16th century, an extension was made on the south side. A wooden beam ceiling runs through the interior, the choir is separated from the hall by a Gothic arch. The figure of Jesus Christ crucified in the choir dates back to the 15th century. The Renaissance pulpit with the painted pictures of the four evangelists Matthäus, Markus, Lukas and Johannes from 1560 is the oldest surviving Protestant pulpit in Dithmarschen. The altar, which has Mannerist style elements and is unique in its kind in Schleswig-Holstein, dates from the same period.

In the church many cheeks from 1579/80 have been preserved, most of them with the coat of arms of the Hogenwords family: in the split shield half an eagle and nine diamonds.

The epitaph of the state and parish authorized representative Jacob Heldt and his wife Anna from 1672 on the south wall of the hall is a fine example of the cartilage baroque style; mermaids are depicted on the sides.

In the organ gallery there is a large picture of Luther, which the North Frisian painter Carl Ludwig Jessen from Deezbüll painted in 1883. The picture "Sturmstillung", also located there, was painted by Heider Hans Gross in 1964. The Benedictine monastery, which was settled here in 1503 on a pledge of the Dithmarschers at the Battle of Hemmingstedt in 1500, only existed until 1517. During that time, the nuns may have used the church as a monastery church.
