At the beginning of the 18th century, Zürner re-measured the Saxon streets and paths, then the Elector gave instructions that distance columns should be set up on the main and post streets. Originally, the distance pillars were supposed to be at all city gates, later only pillars were placed in the markets. The Neustädter column was erected in 1730 and moved several times to the market. The distances are given in league hours, one league hour is 4.531 km.
