In 1378, Emperor Charles IV granted the town of Dinkelsbühl the privilege of operating two mills. The town mill was then built on the Wörnitz, but it also served as a fortress and was intended to protect the town from attacks from the southeast. The battlements, loopholes and moat are still evidence of this function. Today, the town mill houses the 3rd Dimension Museum, which specializes in spatial perception and optical illusions.

The town mill is something very special due to its location in the town fortifications.

“… The town mill was built after Emperor Charles IV granted the town of Dinkelsbühl the privilege of operating two mills in 1378. The fortress-like building (14th century) with a moat, battlements and embrasures secured the town in the south-east against attacks.
Today the 3rd Dimension Museum is housed here. It shows methods for perceiving spatial depth such as anaglyphs, stereograms, stereo photographs and optical illusions. The museum is equally suitable for adults, young people and children.
The rear part of the mill has been the home of the Dinkelsbühl boys' band since 2013. The fortified Radstatt and part of the battlements are accessible from the courtyard. ...”Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments (City of Dinkelsbühl, monuments, 2023-05-13):
