The Battle of Imde during WW1 took place on Monday 24 August 1914. This memorial commemorates this battle. The information board gives you the historical context. Very interesting. And you can muse on the Great War on the benches in front of the monument.

Partly due to 'friendly fire', more than 90 Belgian soldiers lost their lives here. Young soldiers of the third Regiment Jagers te Voet were sent out to reconnoiter the enemy lines and to slow down the Germans in their advance towards Antwerp. Arriving in Imde they were bombarded on one side by German artillery fire. Due to a misjudgment, soldiers of their own Belgian regiment shot them from the other side with shells filled with lead balls. The great havoc happened on the Kouter. Because no medical help showed up, the inhabitants of Imde went looking for survivors themselves after the battle. The girls' school was quickly set up as a field hospital. The fallen were buried around the church. It was Miss J. Orianne who later had the bodies exhumed and identified and gave many of them a final resting place in the soldiers' cemetery of Eppegem.

A place of reflection on the madness of war.

A monument commemorates the unnecessary victims who perished under their own fire.

Information boards on the site provide insights into the tragedy.
