"The Mechtenberg itself was originally 99 meters high, but its height has now decreased to 84 meters as a result of mountain subsidence. The Bismarck Tower of the city of Essen, built in 1900, stands on the mountain, since the summit is located in the Essen city area Rheinelbe describes it as "Experimental field: two mountains - one cultural landscape", in which naturalness and artificiality are complementary opposites .. At the entrance to the recultivated landfill, the artist Thomas Link installed four 2.60 m high basalt columns in 1998 as the "sound field of stones on the Mechtenberg - on the subject of the cross. ”(Wikipedia)

"The approximately 290 hectare Mechtenberg Landscape Park is located in the middle of the triangle of cities of Bochum, Essen and Gelsenkirchen. This landscape park is named after the approximately 83 meter high Mechtenberg, which is one of the few naturally formed mountains in the Ruhr area. A visit to this landscape park is worthwhile at any time of year. In the middle of the industrial Ruhr area, more precisely in the border area between Bochum, Essen and Gelsenkirchen, there is a true oasis to escape the gray everyday life - the Mechtenberg Landscape Park. There you will find dreamlike backdrops in spring, summer, autumn or winter, which have made the dreary gray of the Ruhr area more and more colorful in recent years. The beauty of the Mechtenberg Landscape Park was also given a little boost in the 1990s. Cycle and hiking trails as well as orchards and avenues were created to offer visitors a more attractive environment on the one hand, but also to create a new habitat for the animal world." Unfortunately, the Mechtenberg is no longer used as a temporary LandArt gallery, but I have not found any new information on this.
