On November 4, 1916, U 20 was on its way home from its 29th deployment. Due to a current shift and the dense fog, the boat ran aground here. Every salvage attempt by summoned German torpedo boats failed. The submarine was blown up the next day, fearing that English forces were on their way to the site of the beaching. The turret, cannon and periscope are on display at the Sea War Museum Jutland in Thyboron.
The remains of the boat are still at the bottom of the sea not far from the beach.U 20 became notorious when it sank the steamer Lusitania with a torpedo on May 7th, 1915, whereupon 1198 people on board this ship lost their lives. Since Americans were also among the victims, it is assumed that this sinking was one of the reasons why the USA entered the war.
