In June 2018, the exploitation of the ENCI quarry in Maastricht was definitively shut down. The company, for whom returning the area to nature was a matter of course, subsequently redeveloped it before handing it over to a conservation organization.
The transformation plan was taken into account during the redevelopment: a plan that was jointly drawn up by ENCI, the Province of Limburg, the municipality of Maastricht, Natuurmonumenten (organization for the protection of cultural and natural heritage) and the Sint-Pietersberg Adembenemend Foundation, a local residents' association.
