Until the establishment of the Evangelical parish in Dönberg in 1872, the evangelical population of Dönberg belonged to the parishes in Langenberg, Neviges and Elberfeld for centuries. Because long distances to attend church services or for official acts were necessary in wind and weather, the people on Dönberg demanded the construction of their own place of worship.

In January 1845 the land on which the church stands today was bought. The foundation stone was laid in July and the church was inaugurated with a service on August 20, 1846.

After several renovations as well as several conversions and additions, most recently in 2009, the church presents itself today - because of the large clear glass windows - as a bright village church, which is popular with smaller worship groups, such as wedding ceremonies, due to its size with approx. 300 seats .

The church is equipped with the Beckerath organ and an acoustic piano for the musical organization of church services and concerts.
