Beautiful Roman Catholic parish church in Wittichenau, here Johann von Schadowitz, who was deeply connected to Christianity, found his last rest. The Croatian colonel Johann von Schadowitz (HR: Janko Šajatović, 1624–1704) is considered the "real" Krabat and can be associated with the mystical good magician KRABAT. A memorial plaque for Johann von Schadowitz is in the Wittichenau parish church.

Hiking

A wooden church is said to have stood on the site of our parish church as early as 1000. The first massive building was around 1230. Since then, the church has grown into a splendid Gothic structure. Wars and devastating city fires repeatedly destroyed parts of the church and led to the church building being rebuilt in different forms.

Inside the church is a memorial plaque for Johann Schadowitz, the model for the legendary figure Krabat, who found his final resting place in the church.

The patronage "Maria (or Assumption)" of this church refers to one of the many commemorative days or feast days in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. It goes back to the feast of their physical acceptance into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15th.
In many rural areas it is customary that on this day herbal bundles (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) are collected by the population and blessed in the festival service.
