Tips

  • A great sight. And yes, it is an imposing building. That was not always the case, because the town hall stood empty for a long time and could no longer be used due to its poor condition. The renovation could not begin until the end of the 20th century. The exterior renovation was completed in 2001 and the interior renovation was started in the years that followed. Most recently, in 2009, the new staircase to the huge council chamber, which can accommodate 200 people, was inaugurated.

A touching story became known in 2008 when a 200-year-old love letter was found during the restoration of the interior, which testifies to an unhappy love. The letter is shown today in the exhibition of the city museum.

  • Meissen Town Hall
The town hall, built in the late Gothic style, extends across the entire northern side of the market square in Meißen
The town hall is adorned by the main portal, which was built between 1470 and 1486. The portal is ogival with a round bar and two throats on both sides. The city coat of arms made of sandstone can be found above the main entrance. The impressive building is located directly on the Meißner Markt and is now surrounded by restored and renovated town houses. Inside the town hall there is the large council hall on the upper floor with a wooden beam ceiling resting on three stone pillars.

  • The town hall of the city of Meißen is considered the oldest of its kind in the Saxony area. The imposing building is located directly on the Meißner Markt and is today surrounded by restored and renovated town houses from the Renaissance period. The town hall was built between the years 1470 and 1486. It was to serve as the seat of the town councilors from Meissen, who kept an overview of the city and all legal processes from here.
