The nature reserve 'Stodthagen natural forest and adjacent raised bogs' was designated in 1942 and protects the remainder of a raised bog that has largely been peat removed or converted to grassland. The dams you walk on are traces of previous use.
In the east of the nature reserve there is an almost 1 ha large moor lake that was created by peat extraction.
In order to stop further drainage of the moor body, individual ditches were sealed, resulting in numerous pools in the forest, which you can see immediately on the Komoot map.
The common heather and cotton grass are particularly enchanting from the typical high moor vegetation.
The nature reserve is closely linked to the Stodthagener Forest to the south. The moor drains via ditches to Mühlenau, which flows into the Fuhlensee near Schilksee, which you vlt. know from ice skating in winter.
