St. Peter's Abbey, Salzburg
St. Peter's Abbey - Salzburg Archabbey
St. Peter's Abbey was founded in the 7th century and is considered the oldest existing monastery in the German-speaking world. In addition to the striking Christian buildings, St. Peter's Cemetery and the so-called catacombs are a major attraction for visitors to Salzburg.
St. Peter's Abbey and Abbey
The first monastery church of St. Peter was built in 696 by Rupert, Bishop of Worms. The present abbey was built in the 12th century and has been redesigned several times over the years, combining elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo. The historic main organ and the various chapels are particularly worth seeing. The St. Peter Museum and the Long Gallery are accessible via the DomQuartier.

The Collegiate Church of St. Peter is one of the most popular churches in the city of Salzburg. Many people associate emotional experiences with the collegiate church of St. Peter. Be it weddings, baptisms or funeral ceremonies.
The center of our monastery is the collegiate church of St. Peter. The destroyed first abbey church was designed by Abbot Balderich in the style of the High Romanesque style. 1147, this still existing construction was inaugurated.

The name derives from the first disciple and apostle, Simon, the fisherman from Galilee, Saint Peter (ancient Greek πέτρα = rock, stone, "On this rock I want to build my church") derived. It is an ancient tradition of the Roman Catholic Church that the first church in a mission area is named after St. Peter.
