The Kirchdorf is located about 17 kilometers southwest of Coburg in the Alstergrund on a mountain slope. In the west, the district boundary corresponds to the Bavarian state border with Thuringia. District road HAS 62 connects Dürrenried with the neighboring towns of Wasmuthhausen and Merlach, district road HAS 43 with Lechenroth. Community connecting roads lead to Gleismuthhausen and Käßlitz in Thuringia.

Because of a bomb-related fire in 1945 in the Würzburg State Archives, there are no longer any documents on the oldest history of Dürrenried.

According to Klemm, the first mention of the place was in 1180 in a document from Bishop Reginhard of Würzburg, among others with "Boppo de Durenrith" as a witness. Schmiedel refers to 1597 as the year of the first mention as "Durrenriet". The place name indicates a drained swamp.
