Along the sandy heights, a wide load runs from east to west, an old road that came from Wirbenz in the Upper Palatinate and passed Penkensees along the height into the Bayreuth area. It is the Palatinate trade route, an escort route. The escort was handed over to the escort column at the stone cross above Weidenberg.
At the highest point of the Plösener Heide (at 551) there is a stone cross at a fork in the road. A forest guide branches off to the left to Seybothenreuth. At the expanded square there is a shelter made of tree trunks, the Kreuzsteinhütte, built a few years ago by the Fichtelgebirgsverein Speichersdorf; The hut and the place are looked after by the youth group. In the open hut there is an overview map of the hiking trails.

The Steinkreuzhütte offers the opportunity to take a short break. A good place for a short break, especially with children on the way to the Tauritzmühle. In the event of a sudden shower, you can just take shelter.
