The Ritom power station of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB was built from 1917.
The Ritom railway ran from June 1918 as an internal construction and worker railway, and from 1921 also for tourists.
With a gradient of 41.28 degrees (87.8%), it is one of the steepest funicular railways in Switzerland.

As with the SBB Amsteg power station, the winch is also installed in the valley station. The traction cable is diverted at the top at the Piora mountain station and guided to the valley station via special supports.

There is an intermediate station Altanca. The former Sanatorio station is no longer in operation.
The current carriage for 50 passengers dates from 1985. The former carriage is on display at the valley station in Piotta.

The winch railway runs for public transport from May to October. However, it is also in operation in winter for official trips by the power station staff.
