The ancient Romans already appreciated the beautiful landscape and the delicious wine of the Middle Moselle. Neumagen-Dhron, favored by its strategically important location, was very important for the Romans in Germany for a long time. Therefore, they expanded it into a fortified castle, which is still evidenced by the foundation walls that can be seen in the village itself. During the work on the fort, monuments were built into the foundation of the fort and have been preserved to this day. That's why you can still take a look at the many Roman traces in Neumagen-Dhron today.

    Neumagen wine ship:

The Neumagen wine ship is the tomb of a Roman wine merchant from around 220 AD. The remains of the tomb were found in Neumagen in 1878 as part of the foundation of the defensive wall of the late antique Roman fortress Noviomagus Treverorum. Because of their age, this and other finds led to Neumagen being called the “oldest wine town in Germany”.

An original is now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier (landesmuseum-trier.de). A replica is installed at St. Peter's Chapel in Neumagen-Dhron.

Other stone monuments can be visited

The majority of these were stones from former tombs from the period between the end of the first and the middle of the third century. The reliefs show scenes from everyday life such as wine transport, everyday school life, personal hygiene, rent payment, hunting and the funeral meal, but also mythological motifs. The contents, as well as the highly sophisticated craftsmanship of the stone carvings, point to a workshop that is more likely to be in the Augusta Treverorum area than in the rural surroundings of Noviomagus Batavorum.

Today the stone monuments are in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier (landesmuseum-trier.de), where they have been partially reconstructed and put together to form a “grave road” that gives an impression of the appearance and effect of the burial grounds in the should convey antiquity.
