The bridge was destroyed by the Wehrmacht at the end of World War II. You are a permanent memorial that we must never allow anything like this to happen again.

The Neißesteg and Lange Brücke were built in the 1920s and replaced older wooden bridges. The footbridge was reserved for pedestrians, the Long Bridge was the central connection to Berge and Forster Neustadt. There was only a distance of around 350 meters between the two bridges. In 1945 both bridges were destroyed to hinder the advance of Soviet troops. After the war, the Berge district, now in Poland, was almost completely demolished and the rubble was used as building material for houses in more central parts of Poland. The bridge pillars on both sides of the Neisse were preserved as memorials. Repeatedly expressed plans to restore the bridges after 1990 have so far failed, among other things, because there were disagreements about the suitable location.

Unfortunately, there is nothing more east of the Neisse that would be worth rebuilding the bridges. Too bad, at least for cyclists and pedestrians it would be nice.
