A hospital was first mentioned in Merseburger Straße in 1274. In the Büttner chronicle (early 18th century) it is mentioned as "Lorentz-Spital" and reports that it is also "hall hospital" and "rich hospital" (in contrast to the "poor hospital" St. Jakob in the upper Nikolaistraße, where one devotes oneself to end-of-life care) is called.

Wolfgang Krause's chronicle reports that the hospital was owned by a Laurentius v. Jaucha had been donated by giving the city his farm on the other side of the Saale with the condition that a hospital of his name be built there. Due to the fact that this farm with all its possessions was given over to it, it was richer than the others from the start, for example it owned the bakery in Markwerben. More credible is the statement in Gerhardt's chronicle that it was founded in 1269 by Margrave Dietrich the Wise of Landsberg (1242-1285) and that it was only then handed over to the town of Weißenfels. It is therefore most likely that the margrave donated it and the noble gave up his court for it. Büttner also reports that there were always more people there than in the other hospitals, about more than in the St. Nikolaus hospital (also St. Niklas, St. Nicolas; hospital for women in the lower Naumburger Straße), and that there were always larger ones Sums of money were donated, which was favored by an indulgence from the Bishop of Merseburg in 1404, as Georg Kämm (Weißenfelser Heimatbote 2/1992) reports. According to Volker F. Hessler, this happened in 1401.

A first new building was already necessary in 1571 and included the church as well as the entire hospital, which is why it took until 1574 for everything to be completed. Even after the destruction in the Thirty Years' War, restoration measures were certainly necessary. When the new building was built in 1877/78, the location was also changed and chosen further away from the Saale, which the city bought. Until then it had stood near the Gloria cinema, a picture of which has survived. It was demolished in 1878 as the railroad needed the site. The new building was designed as a retirement home with a church, and the style chosen was North German brick Gothic. As is usual with hospital churches, a tower was omitted and only a roof turret was placed on the church. It was opened a year after the laying of the foundation stone.

In the course of a new building, the old hospital was demolished and the current building was erected in the years 1877-1878 with a single-nave hall church in the neo-Gothic style.
